1 . Paryatan Parv


About Paryatan Parv 2019

  • Paryatan Parv 2019 is dedicated to 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Paryatan Parv is being organized with the objective of drawing focus on the benefits of tourism, showcasing the cultural diversity of the country and reinforcing the principle of “Tourism for All”.

Components of Paryatan Parv

  • Dekho Apna Desh:  To encourage Indians to visit their own country. In the run up to the parv, several activities have been organised across the Country like Photography contest covering tourism attractions and experiences, promotion on Social Media, Tourism related Quiz, Essay, Debate and Painting Competitions for Students. General public engagement for the event will be promoted through the MyGov platform.
  • Tourism for All:  Tourism Events at sites across all States in the country are being organised. The activities at these sites will include illumination in and around the Sites, Cultural Programmes of Dance, Music, Theatre, Story Telling, Sensitisation Programmes for Stakeholders around the Sites, Tourism Exhibitions, Showcasing Culture, Cuisine and Handicrafts / Handlooms, Guided Heritage Walks, etc.
  • Tourism & Governance:  Interactive Sessions & Workshops with Stakeholders on varied themes have  been organised across the Country as a part of the Paryatan parv activities.

2 . Gandhian Challenge


Context : On the 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, AIM, NITI Aayog’s Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and UNICEF India, including Generation Unlimited, have launched ‘The Gandhian Challenge’.

About Gandhian Challenge

  • This innovation challenge provides a platform for every child across India to ideate innovative solutions for a sustainable India of their dreams, using Gandhi’s principles.
  • The contest – open for every child in India from 2 October to 20 October – also celebrates 70 years of partnership between Government of India and UNICEF India to enable Every Right for Every Child.
  • “Through this partnership, AIM and UNICEF recognize every child’s ability and right to voice their dreams for a world of their choice, following Gandhi’s principles.
  • Aim is to support young innovators and entrepreneurs
  • The problem statement for the Gandhian Challenge is: “Share your innovative solutions/ideas to create a futuristic and sustainable world of your dreams, following Gandhi’s principles.”

About AIM

  • AIM is the Government of India’s flagship initiative to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.
  • AIM’s objective is to develop new programmes and policies for fostering innovation in different sectors of the economy, provide platform and collaboration opportunities for different stakeholders, create awareness and create an umbrella structure to oversee innovation ecosystem of the country.

Six major initiatives of AIM

  • Atal Tinkering Labs-Creating problem-solving mindset across schools in India.
  • Atal Incubation Centers-Fostering world class start-ups and adding a new dimension to the incubator model.
  • Atal New India Challenges-Fostering product innovations and aligning them to the needs of various sectors/ministries.
  • Mentor India Campaign– A national Mentor network in collaboration with public sector, corporates and institutions, to support all the initiatives of the mission.
  • Atal Community Innovation Center– To stimulate community centric innovation and ideas in the unserved /underserved regions of the country including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
  • ARISE-To stimulate innovation and research in the MSME industry.

About UNICEF India and Generation Unlimited

  • UNICEF, an integral part of the United Nations, works with governments, communities, civil society organizations, the private sector, and other partners worldwide to advance children’s rights, and is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. 
  • Generation Unlimited is a new UNICEF-led global partnership that aims to ensure that every young person age 10-24 is in some form of school, learning, training, self-employment, or age-appropriate employment by 2030.
  • It aims to co-create and scale up proven solutions related to secondary age-education, skills for learning, employability and decent work, and empowerment, with a focus on girls.

3 . Vayoshreshtha Samman – 2019


About Vayoshreshtha Samman

  • Vayoshreshtha Samman is a Scheme of awards instituted by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (D/o Social Justice & Empowerment) and gradually upgraded to the status of National Awards, for institutions involved in rendering distinguished service for the cause of elderly persons especially indigent senior citizens and to eminent citizens in recognition of their service/achievements.
  • These awards are presented as part of the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) on 1st October.
  • The National Awards are intended to show case the Government’s concern for senior citizens and its commitment towards them with the aim of strengthening their legitimate place in the society. 
  • It is also intended to provide an opportunity to the younger generation to understand the contribution of the elderly in building of the society and the nation. 
  • The awards are intended to be conferred on eminent senior citizens and institutions involved in rendering distinguished services for the cause of elderly persons especially indigent senior citizens.  The recipients are drawn from diverse fields. 
  • The Awards are given to institutions/organisations/individuals from any part of the country. Nominations are invited from Governmental and Non-Governmental Agencies. 

4 . National Crisis Management Committee 


About National Crisis Management Committee

  • For effective implementation of relief measures in the wake of a natural calamity, the Cabinet may set up a committee called as National Crisis Management Committee
  • Cabinet Secretary, which is the highest executive officer, heads the NCMC.
  • Secretaries of all the concerned Ministries /Departments as well as organizations are the members of the Committee.
  • The NCMC gives direction to the Crisis Management Group as deemed necessary.

Crisis Management Group

  • The Central Relief Commissioner in the Ministry of Home Affairs is the Chairman of the CMG, consisting of senior officers (called as nodal officers) from various concerned Ministries.

Functions of CMG

Functions of CMG is to review :

  • Every year contingency plans formulated by various Ministries/Departments/ Organizations in their respective sectors,
  • Measures required for dealing with a natural disaster,
  • Coordinate the activities of the Central Ministries and the State Governments in relation to disaster preparedness and relief
  • To obtain information from the nodal officers on measures relating to above.

5 . Facts for Prelims


Lal Bahadur Shastri

  • The second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri, was known as a statesman par excellence for his contribution towards India’s efforts towards self-sustenance and self-reliance.
  • Shastri is remembered as a great mind who was known for his exceptional will power. Born on October 2, 1904 in Mughalsarai (modern day Uttar Pradesh), he is best remembered for his slogan, ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’.
  • He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi with whom he shared his birthday.
  • Despite being relatively new to the high office, he led the country successfully through the Indo-Pakistan War in 1965. It was on January 11, 1966 that he took breathed his last in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, a day after signing the Tashkent Declaration, reportedly due to cardiac arrest.
  • The title ‘Shastri’ was given after he completed his graduation at Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi in 1925. The title ‘Shastri’ refers to a ‘scholar’ or a person, adept in the holy scriptures.
  • On August 15, 1947, he became the Minister of Police and Transport. It was during his tenure that the first women bus conductors were appointed. He was the one who suggested the use of jets of water instead of lathis to disperse unruly crowds.
  • He was the first person to be posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence

  • The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence was instituted by Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management (LBSIM), Delhi, promoted by Lal Bahadur Shastri Educational Society.
  • The Award honours each year a distinguished Indian residing either in India or abroad for his/her sustained individual contributions and outstanding achievements of high professional order and excellence in the field of management, public administration, public affairs, education, Institution building, art & culture and sports.
  • The honour carries a cash award of Rs. Five Lakh plus a Citation and a Plaque. The Awardee’s name is inscribed on the Honours Roll of LBSIM and he/she is designated as Lal Bahadur Shastri Fellow

Consumer App

  • In order to fast-track consumer grievance redressal process and provide an effective forum for consumers to give their valuable suggestions to the Department on consumer related issues launched the ‘Consumer App’ 
  • The Consumer App is loaded with various consumer centric features which will benefit both Consumers and the Government. Consumers can sign-up with an OTP (one time password) and create an user ID and password to use the app. Consumers will now be able to lodge complaints / Grievances directly through this app which then will be taken up with companies for quick redressal. Feature to track the lodged grievances is also built in this app.  Various important links that will be useful to the consumers are also available in the app.
  • The knowledge base available in the app is a very useful feature that will help consumers get information pertaining to 42 Sectors including Consumer Durables, Electronic Products, e-commerce, Banking, Insurance, etc. Consumers can use this app in Hindi and English on both Android and IoS platforms.
